Sea Weed Sampler Page

SeaWeed Page
Well, It's a while since I've been able to sew, so here's lots of catch up stitches. The fabric is a rough basis to make a fabric book page with some old tee shirt fabric. I then intended to just pop a couple of things on just to see the idea. Then I tried out my new beads, then a new stitch and woops. This is evolution at work. The end thing is much too grand for the naff fabric ! But lots of things learned. :-)

"Inchies"

"Inchies"
Well, here's my version of  Inchies. Not all quite an inch of course and not quite lined up - of course that's all I can see when I look at it now :-) Much fun was had in the making of this. Lots of I really like this homemade felt made by my sister. If you look closely it has a sort of marbled effect with darker threads going across it. Bit of a pig to work with as it leaves bits of blue fluff all over.

For the Flower stitch I managed to make the cord plunge, pleased with how it lies.

Embedded butterfly
The butterfly took a bit of fixing. Made holes in the fabric, pushed the two posts through and anchored it at the back. I think it goes tho, and it won't come off in a hurry :-)

With added herringbone
I felt my diamond stitch square needed something more so I've tried it with herringbone stitch on top. I prefer the effect viewed from afar.

An inchie

Making inchies so made a little inchie heart for mum. rather pleased with the idea for the ends - I did a waste knot to start at the bottom of the heart and left a longish end. Then all the other ends are just threaded into that one knot. Made with homemade needlefelt made by my sister who's clever with things. I just love the colours and you can just make out the kind of marbled effect with a darker thread in it. But it's a pig to work cos not very stable and it leaves little threads of blue fluff everywhere. Worth the effort tho.

Needlelace and Palestrina

Needlelace House and Tree

Needlelace house
Well, this was fun but a bit fiddly. The border is Palestrina Stitch, which I got to grips with more this time round after seeing a video on Mary Corbett's Needle'n'Thread. I need to work on the winding on the tree - mix of winding and buttonhole to secure it. The thread got very twizzly in it's behaviour. Didn't think to untwizzle in the opposite direction before winding round. You live and learn. For the house the hill is up and down detached buttonhole with lattice stitch - I got the hang better on the left than the right. The house is filled in with wide needleweaving.

I'm learning about design. I wanted it to look like an open door with the light shining out down the path but looking at it it's too small for that to be clear - a narrower path would have shown off the hill better and would have given me more space to work with on the left . Also tried to do hills in the distance off on the right but didn't really work so snipped it out. Learned lots of lessons - draw out in one thread so the links to the side are paler. Can always add in more lines of thread after. Was pleased with the way that using knots like in lattice st held the initial lines of the house and doorway in place.
